Universal Screening Assessment Descriptions
AIMSweb Curriculum-Based Measurements
Achievement Improvement Monitoring System (AIMSweb) provides schools with curriculum-based measurement testing materials and web based software to collect data and progress monitor students.
- Letter Naming Fluency (LNF) The LNF is a standardized curriculum-based measurement used to assess students’ letter naming ability. The task requires students to identify as many upper and lower case letter names as they can in one minute. Students are given a letters named correctly score.
- Letter Sound Fluency (LSF) The LSF is a standardized curriculum-based measurement used to assess students’ letter sound identification ability. The task requires students to identify as many sounds when presented with lower case letters as they can in one minute. Students are given a letter sounds named correctly score.
- Nonsense Word Fluency (NWF) The NWF is a standardized curriculum-based measurement used to assess students’ understanding of letter sound relationships. The task requires students to say as many sounds in non-real consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words as they can in one minute. Students are scored on the ability to identify the correct letter sounds.
- Reading Curriculum-Based Measure (R-CBM) The R-CBM is a standardized curriculum-based measurement to assess students’ general reading achievement skills and oral reading fluency. Students read aloud from meaningful, connected, leveled passages for one minute. The number of words read correctly and errors are counted. Students’ accuracy is also taken into consideration. Text that students read with 95% or greater accuracy is considered to be at their independent level, text read with 90-94% accuracy is considered to be at a student’s instructional level, and text read with less than 90% is considered to be frustrational.
- MAZE Comprehension Measure The MAZE is a standardized curriculum-based measurement used in conjunction with the R-CBM to provide a more complete picture of students’ reading skills. MAZE is a multiple-choice fill in the blank task that students complete while reading silently. Every 7th word is replaced with three words in parenthesis. The students must choose the appropriate word while reading silently for three minutes. Students are scored on the number of correct responses in three minutes.
