General Technology Education Safety Rules

Taken from the FMS Handbook

Safety is a responsibility of everyone involved. A safety program is more than eliminating major injuries to personnel. Safety means the elimination of al accidents, injury to personnel (as well as students), buildings, facilities, and equipment. Careful consideration and a study of safety in the shop is important.

General Safety Rules

  1. Students are not permitted to use hand tools or operate machines until they have been demonstrated in class, and then checked out by the instructor.
  2. Goggles must be worn at all times.
  3. Hair length should be minimal or tied back.
  4. Be careful of loose clothing and jewelry.
  5. Respect all tools and machines.
  6. Inspect all wood (materials) for defects and foreign objects before using it.
  7. Always check the condition of the tool or machine. If it is faulty in any way, do not use it. Inform the instructor as soon as possible.
  8. Be careful of sawdust and wood scrap and keep all walkways clear.
  9. Report all incidents, no matter how small, to the instructor.
  10. If you are not sure about something, ASK FIRST!

Machine Tools

  1. Always approach a machine as if it were running.
  2. Never run your hand over a machine surface as you walk by.
  3. Never sit on a machine.
  4. When starting a machine, always stand clear; flying objects could be thrown out of the machine.
  5. Only one person is to operate a machine. If a helper is needed, he/she will be directed by the operator.
  6. Never look into a machine that could possibly kick back wood.
  7. Never use a tool, a piece of wood, or anything to stop a machine after the power has been turned off.
  8. Never enter an occupied safety zone.
  9. Watch out for kick back areas.
  10. All portable tools are to be grounded. Do not use an electrical tool if any part of your physical person is wet. Do not use an electrical tool that is not grounded.

Responsible, acceptable behavior is expected at all times in all technology education classrooms. Students may be subject to suspension of operating power equipment and hand tools, and/or removal from technology education classroom, if safety rules are not followed.
