Welcome to 6th Grade Computers

This area of the Techweb contains all of the information concerning the activities and assignments related to the 6th Grade Computer course! This site serves as a resource for students throughout the course of the 36 day cycle they spend here in the Design Lab, and a resource for parents to learn more about what their students are doing from day to day. The new robotics activity information will be posted soon. For the moment you can see what was done last year using the Techno-K'Nex robotics materials.

What Will You Learn About?

Keyboarding

  • Students use Typing Tutor 10 software to develop proper keyboarding skills using the keyboards home row (left hand on "asdf" and right and on "jkl;") to become touch typists. Touch typing means that students can accurately type text on a screen without the need to constantly look down at the keyboard. Students practice their skills using Practice & Lessons in the Typing Tutor software. All students are encouraged to find a comfortable typing speed where they can be the most accurate, and to increase their speed as they become more comfortable with the keyboard layout and the inability to see the keyboard layout due to the use of keyboard covers. Students are expected to works towards typing at least 15 words a minute with an accuracy of 85%.

MS Publisher Basics

  • Students complete the Shel Silverstein Times activity after an introduction to the Microsoft Publisher software package. This activity involves taking four short Shel Silverstein poems and placing them on a single sheet layout including graphics.

Research Methods & Newsletter Design

  • Students use a variety of online resources and search techniques to find information on any of a number of teacher provided topics. They are assigned to create a newsletter that informs readers about the information they have learned through their research. The newsletter also contains graphics to accompany the research to help inform the reader!

Robotics & Programming

  • Students will be introduced to F.R.E.D.-E. (Fleetwood's Robotic Education Device - Earth Class), WALL-E's cousin... F.R.E.D.-E. is another name for the new Lego Mindstorm NXT robot kits that have arrived as part of last year's curriculum review process. These new Mindstorm systems will allow students to spend more time learning the programming end of robotics than on construction.
