Bullying is...

A student is being bullied when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more students.

Bullying can be verbal or non-verbal.  Verbal bullying involves using words to hurt another person.  Non-verbal bullying uses physical means to threaten or hurt another person. 

Types of Bullying

     Direct

  • Hitting, kicking, shoving, pushing

  • Taunting, teasing, racial slurs

  • Sexual harassment  (Sexual harassment is any unwanted verbal comments, touching or gestures that have a sexual meaning to them.) 
  • Threatening looks, obscene gestures

      Indirect

  • Getting another person to hit someone else or fight for you
  • Spreading rumors

  • Deliberate exclusion from a group or activity

 

Bullying is not...

  • nthe right to choose friends
  • nequal banter (two people teasing each other when neither is in a position of power over the other)
  • nequal horseplay (two people shoving, etc. when neither is in a position of power over the other)
  • nconflict between two people of equal power
