Fleetwood Area School District
by Dr. Greg M. Miller, Superintendent
It has truly been a pleasure to be a part of the Fleetwood Area School District for this first semester of the school year. I have had many opportunities to see the wonderful things being done here in the district. I spent the first day greeting students at each building watching them come to school excited for the new school year.
The fall brought much excitement in the way of sports. We certainly have much to be proud of as I watched our student athletes compete. Additionally, our cheerleaders and band were always there to root on our Tigers. I can’t forget the excitement of the girls’ soccer team making it to the State semifinals. I know I was very proud of their hard work!
Throughout this school year we are rolling out the 1:1 initiative that has started in 8th grade at the middle school. This year, sets of chrome books were placed in 8th grade classrooms for teachers to use with students. The teachers have been involved in professional learning throughout the semester to help build their understanding of using technology as an instructional tool. Here is a link to a presentation that outlines the initiative. /docs/district/depts/24/superintendent's messagenew folder/instructional technology board presentation plan.pdf?id=3490
As well as the work on 1:1 there have been many additional professional development opportunities as we strive for continued improvement within the district. Regardless of how long someone has been in the teaching profession, there is always something we can learn by working together discussing current educational issues. In October I had the opportunity to accompany high school teachers to the Berks County Career and Technology Center (BCTC) to get a firsthand look at all of the outstanding programs being offered there.
In addition to professional development, I spend many hours meeting and talking about the educational systems here in Fleetwood. During the November school board meeting I had the opportunity to share my analysis of the district. I took this opportunity to highlight some of the strengths in the district but also some of the areas needing more focus. The presentation that was shared can be seen by clicking on the PowerPoint below.
The first semester drew to a close with holiday concerts at each level. The quality of music within our district is outstanding. It is no surprise considering how devoted our community is to music.
Throughout this first semester I have had many opportunities to witness our exceptional students and teachers here in Fleetwood. I have seen this through classroom visits, awards/recognition ceremonies, as well as informal meetings.
